Thursday, September 1, 2011: During the past month New Baltimore Volunteer Fire and Rescue has been involved in some unique natural disasters. Starting with the earthquake on August 23. Multiple calls were run from the smell of gas, broken water lines, and general welfare checks. Overall the New Baltimore area fair extremely well.
Our next natural disasters were brought by heavy amounts of rain. The first was Hurricane Irene that skirted the coast of Virginia on August 26. Lots of rain report with only minor flooding. Our fellow citizens to the east took the brunt of the storm.
Then again major rain came through the area as Hurricane Lee remnants seemed to want to just hang around. This storm produced very large amounts of rain over a 3 day period. Some additional flooding was noted and tree’s falling down due to ground saturation.
A reminder to all members of the community. Be prepared for natural disasters. For assistance contact your local fire department or visit http://www.fema.gov/plan/index.shtm
