NBVFRC Member Saves Co-Worker

September 23rd, 2015 — Kevin Ege, an active volunteer with our station was able to use his EMT skills at his full time job. Kevin’s coworkers at Akamai Technologies in Reston, alerted him to a medical emergency involving one of their own.

As Kevin’s training went to work he grabbed the newly purchased Automated External Defibrillator (AED). He assessed his coworker and determined he wasn’t breathing and had no pulse. Kevin directed employees to begin CPR while he setup the AED. Employees were unable to alert 9-1-1 for some time due to a problem with the phone system.

After delivering a shock to his Co-worker another employee was able to reach 9-1-1 on his cell phone. By the time the ambulance had arrived, Kevin and his fellow employees succeeded in their efforts and their coworker was alert and breathing on his own, and was able to return to work on the 14th.

Lucas CPR Device

Last week NBVFRC received our first Lucas CPR device as one of the seven that was obtained in a grant by Fauquier County. Over the weekend and the last couple days members have been getting hands-on training to familiarize themselves with the devices so they are ready to use them if the need arises. These devices will greatly help our crews on the calls involving CPR by reducing the stress and exertion our providers experience. Also, these devices help provide consistent, quality compression in a manner that is safe for everyone involved. We are excited to have this excellent piece of equipment now to help serve and protect our community.
