New Baltimore Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company currently offers several options if someone is considering becoming a volunteer. For the younger age groups who are interested in fire rescue, Company 10 has a cadet program and a junior program.
The cadet program consists of young adults ages 14 to 15. Although unable to respond on emergency calls, cadets are allowed to participate in training scenarios, attend fundraisers and assist with daily station operations. Cadets can also obtain the American Heart Association CPR for the Healthcare Provider certification.
The junior program is available for ages 16 to 18. At age 16, juniors become eligible to enroll in training classes such as EMT and Firefighter. Once a junior member is certified by the state as an EMT or Firefighter, they are allowed to respond on emergency calls after qualifying on the apparatus.
Cadets and juniors are the future of the volunteer fire rescue service, and at Company 10, we take pride in training our younger members and bringing them up the ranks. However, in order to remain in the cadet or junior programs, students must be enrolled in school and present an officer of the company with a report card every semester. Students may not have any grade below a C on any report card, as we feel that education takes priority in the life of young adults.
